Fabric Calculator
First of all, do you know which fabric you are going to stitch on?
If you have a fabric but don't know its count, it's easy! What we need is the number of stitches, or crosses, you will make per centimetre.
Take a ruler and count the number of threads if it's linen or evenweave fabric, or count the number of squares if it's Aida. This will give you the stitch count per cm.
Example:
On Aida fabric, I count 8 squares per cm — this is therefore 20 count Aida
On linen, I count 14 threads per cm — this is therefore 36 count linen
How many threads will you stitch over?
We are often asked this question! How many fabric threads to stitch over, and how many strands of cotton in the needle? Here is everything you need to know:
On Aida fabric, there is no question — you stitch every square, unlike linen.• On 14 count or 16 count Aida, stitch with 2 strands of thread in the needle.
• On finer fabric such as 18 count or 20 count Aida, use only 1 strand of thread in the needle.
On linen or evenweave fabrics (Murano, Lugana), you can choose to stitch over 2 threads or over 1 thread if you want to create a miniature.
• On 32 count fabric, you can stitch over 2 threads with 2 strands of cotton, or stitch over 1 thread with 1 strand for a miniature
• On 35 count, 40 count, 46 count or even 56 count fabric, stitch over 2 threads with 1 strand of cotton
How to use the fabric calculator?
- Now that you know which fabric you are going to stitch on, select it from the dropdown menu
- Then enter the number of stitches in height and width in the fields. You will find this information on the pattern — if it is not shown, you can also count the stitches directly on the chart (they are generally grouped in blocks of 10 stitches)
- Finally, enter the desired margin in centimeter on each side of the design. For framing, the ideal margin is 8 to 10 cm. In that case enter 10 and you will get the fabric size with a 10 cm margin all around the design.
There you go! You now have the fabric size you need for your project. All that's left is to wish you a happy stitching!
